Shungo Sawada, a true pioneer of Japan’s modern jazz scene, delivers something special with his album "Formation." Despite being a legendary guitarist since the 1940s, Sawada has surprisingly few albums under his own name, making this one a standout. "Formation" kicks off with a unique take on Wayne Shorter’s "Footprints"—dignified, refined, yet with a cool simplicity that gives it real character. The album moves through the high-energy title track, "Formation," the jazz-rock vibes of "Unlucky Guy," and wraps up with another Shorter piece, "Chief Crazy Horse." It's a diverse yet cohesive collection, offering a polished snapshot of Japan’s "new mainstream" jazz.

Promises is an extraordinary, collaborative album by the electronic giant Floating Points and saxophone titan Pharoah Sanders. The album features the London Symphony Orchestra and cover art by the acclaimed American artist, Julie Mehretu. Five years in the making, it will be released on Luaka Bop, March 26, 2021. The album is composed and engineered by Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points, who's second album Crush earned Best New Music from Pitchfork and a major feature in the New York Times, and placed him on several 2019 critics lists. His debut album Elaenia, released by Luaka Bop, was another Best New Music pick and hailed as one of the best debuts of the decade. It is also the release that made Pharoah Sanders want to work with him in the first place. A restless, ever- evolving producer and composer, Shepherd has toured with the xx, and also holds a doctorate in neuroscience. For Pharoah Sanders, who recently turned 80, this is a rare outing and his first album in fifteen years. One of the last icons of his generation, Pharoah performed with John Coltrane on his late-career free jazz masterpieces, and released a string of expansive recordings under his own name for the Impulse! label which have been cited as a pivotal influence by everyone from The Stooges to Marvin Gaye. Most recently, he was featured in a 2020 Supreme campaign. The music unfurls, patiently, over nine movements, and 46 ever-undulating minutes. It's a work of pure feeling, like no other record you'll hear this or any other year.
Soul Media is led by Jiro Inagaki, who played a part in the development of jazz rock in Japan. This album “Memory Lane” was recorded in 1980.Regarding this work, Inagaki said, “We made this work while anticipating the fate of fusion music.”This album contains the mellow and emotional track “Memory Lane”, the stormy and refreshing “I Will Give You Samba”, and the groovy and edgy “Take My Hand”The sound that Jiro created with his sworn friend Norio Maeda while looking ahead to the future of Jazz has an extraordinary degree of perfection in terms of song, arrangement, and performance. Listening to this album years later, it’s still vivid and fresh.
How do you breathe new life into a treasured, classic track? Answer: let Danny Krivit loose on it!Who better to inaugurate our Mr Bongo Edit Series than one of the bosses of the art of the edit. More than just simple re-touches or loops to make the track easier to mix, Danny works his magic by employing all those years of studying and working with music as a remixer, producer and DJ. He has been honing his craft since the art form began and he seems to have a natural intuition for what works on the dancefloor. When we asked Danny if he would be interested in reworking some tracks from Mr Bongo's back catalogue we knew the edits would be special, but Danny has outdone himself with these beauties, and arguably they are more than just edits.By sheer chance, Danny had already worked on a rough personal mix of Sabu Martinez's 'Hotel Alyssa-Sousse, Tunisia’, a track taken from the treasured 'Afro Temple' album originally released in 1973. Danny just needed to freshen and tighten it up to a standard he was happy with, and the result is pure Latin fire. The Belgian / Dutch orchestra leader Nico Gomez's 'Lupita' from 1971 is an undisputed banger, this underground Latin-crossover favourite has been causing mayhem on dancefloors for years. Here Danny takes it into another sphere adding extra drama and build-ups, adding and overlaying fresh percussion which sounds like it could have been taken from lost outtakes. Even those who may have heard 'Lupita' countless times, are sure to be impressed by the new lease of life that Danny has breathed into it.
