About The Word Collected WorksThe Word is one of the better-kept secrets of 1980s Austrian disco music. Yet once you put the needle on this record, you notice that it sounds oddly familiar. The awe-inspiring signature piece “Lobster” has the same analogue, slow-moving aesthetic as Zenit’s timeless “Waiting” that was featured on Edition Hawara’s first release. The same goes for the three other wonderfully unconventional, proto-electronic songs: “Easy”, “All my life” and the eponymous “the word”. And there are even more commonalities with Zenit’s LP: The vocals are Linda Sharrock’s, who here teamed up with Karl “Charly” Ratzer and Peter Ponger, the twin brother of legendary Falco producer Robert Ponger. The result of this collaboration is, well, also quite legendary. How this kind of sound emerged in Vienna in 1984 is still a bit of a mystery, but clearly all the stars were aligned when Sharrock, Ratzer and Ponger were jamming in the studio. We at Edition Hawara are very proud to share this secret with you. Just as there are very few lobsters in landlocked Vienna, there are very few records like this
✺ Repress ✺ Fratelli Malibu is an original idea of Andrea De Fazio with the cooperation of Paolo Petrella, drummer and bassist for the “Nu Guinea” live band. Their love for synthesizers and drum machines brought them together to create the shiny world of Ciro Miami. We could think of Ciro as a neapolitan expat in the american dream, where he discovers a world of excess, flashy cars, cocktail bars, beautiful women, cocaine, gambling, spaceships and videogames that erodes all of his money forcing him to go back to Napoli completely broke, but with a fistful of wonderful memories.
Edition Hawara re-issue of a very rare and sought after Austrian jazz / AOR / funk / pop album 'Straight Ahead' by Zenit from 1986. Includes the awesome track 'Waitin’ featuring Linda Sharrock on vocals.
Horizon Unlimited features the sisters' iconic songs "Come On Home", "Erora" and "Orere - Elejigbo" and was -- as with the rest of their catalog -- incredibly raw, funky and with almost seductive electricity.Recorded at Deccas' London studios and originally released on their Afrodisia imprint in 1979, it was produced by Fela's Odion Iruoje and featured BLO's Laolu Akins on drums and Lemmy Jackson on keys. Sadly, it came to be the last the world heard from the twins for many, many years. “Their final album, “Horizon Unlimited”, was the culmination of their fusion of local and international grooves with urgent social commentary and romantic tidings”, Jon Parales wrote In his obituary for Kehinde Lijadu for The New York Times in 2019.In a review for All Music, Fred Thomas writes “The six tracks on Horizon Unlimited all begin with talking drum, and meld intricate traditional percussion with fluid funk basslines and far-out synthesizer tones, with Taiwo and Kehinde Lijadu's glimmering harmonies dead center. Kicking off with the slow-burning afro-beat of political critique "Orere-Elejigbo", the album's production is precise without ever becoming sterile, and deceptively minimal. Incredibly subtle touches of dub echo, slithering guitar lines and ever-shifting polyrhythmic percussion never rise up enough to call attention to themselves, but rather gel into one impenetrable groove after another. Hypnotic numbers like "Erora" sit next to more rock-influenced and upbeat jams like the incredibly sunshiny "Come On Home", each gliding along in a densely repetitive way that never becomes droning.”He continues: “the Lijadu Sisters’ unique perspective on what pop music was is a large part of what makes Horizon Unlimited and all of their records such fun, refreshing affairs. Completely unassuming and direct, the sisters are unafraid to lay down simple melodies or child-like love songs besides politically charged sentiments. The same "why not?" kind of feeling applies to their grooves." Horizon Unlimited de The Lijadu Sisters
Strut present the definitive edition of Patrice Rushen's landmark album from1982, 'Straight From The Heart'. Recorded during Elektra's drive for 'sophisticated dance music' as many jazzartists created their own arrangements of disco and boogie, the sessions marked a progression for Patrice as she began exploring sonics as much as songwriting."I was looking at different ways to experiment with the sounds on my records. Synths widened the palette available to us." Singles from the album included 'Breakout!', 'Number One' and the global hit 'Forget Me Nots'. "Bassist Freddie Washington played the bassline during a jamat my family's house. I caught it, we kept messing around with the groove, then I developed the lyrics and chorus. It was just about recognising that moment when it came up.
